OZONE
OZONE is an environmental installation created by video artist Bas van Koolwijk and sound artist Derek Holzer, to explore the shifting tide of signals, frequencies and codes passing through our bodies every day. The video of van Koolwijk examines the 'disturbances' which can be induced in the hardware of the video format, while Holzer's sound projects seek to make physical the radiation which is emitted, intentionally or not, by the many of the objects in our everyday world. The OZONE project involves the use of several televisions, various radio receivers and antennae, and a 4 channel audio system to create a storm-cloud of electromagnetics in the exhibition space.

From Feb 27 to March 10, 2003, Holzer and van Koolwijk worked in residence with programmers from theIEM [Institut fur Elektronische Musik und Akustik], in Graz, to develop the OZONE project using free + open source software such as PD and GEM. Initial results of these experiments were presented in performance at the Earational Festival, S'Hertogenbosch [NL].

The OZONE project is possible through the support of Medienturm Graz, and was presented in Graz as part of the Steirischer Herbst festival in October of 2003. A special broadcast was made in conjunction with Kunstradio for the occaision.

BAS VAN KOOLWIJK [NL]
Although Van Koolwijk began his artistic career as a painter, he soon found the medium too limiting to express the color and motion he envisioned. Taking up residence in Utrecht, NL, he began active experiments with the video format. His work has appeared at media art festivals worldwide, such as: Impakt (NL), Mutek (CA), Netmage Festival (IT), Avanto (FIN), European Media Art Festival (D), Pandemonium 2001 (GB), Trans 004 (USA), among others.

"One of the best examples of work on the impalpability of the medium of electronica, has been developed by the Dutch artist Van Koolwijk. His work analyzes the disturbances produced by video, transforming them into numeric code, in order to produce a visual and acoustic sequence of extreme elegance and power." (-Netmage)

DEREK HOLZER [USA]
A long-standing interest in the natural sciences provided Holzer with the background to investigate the man-made phenomenon of radio emissions. After working on several radio and online streaming media endeavors in the US and Eastern Europe, he has settled in Holland for the time being. He has created projects for the RIXC/Re-Lab (LV), Radio Jeleni/FCCA (CZ), ParaRadio/C3 Center (HU), Impakt [NL], Next 5 Minutes (NL) and the V2 (NL).
